Checklist For Setting Up Your New Home
This is a checklist of often overlooked items that will help you feel confident about safety in your new home.
- Re-key all door locks.
- Consider a monitored alarm system with smoke detection.
- Install outside flood lights with motion sensors.
- Install smoke detectors no more than 15 feet from each bedroom and test monthly.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors. Place in occupied bedrooms.
- Have a Fire Ladder available for 2nd floor bedrooms.
- Keep a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
- Know where to turn off Electric, Water, and Gas in an emergency.
- Test water heater Pressure Temperature Relief Valve 2 times a year.
- Clean wood burning fireplace chimneys as needed.
- Have a working Flashlight available for power outages.
- Protect small children from falling out of windows with low sill heights.
